I don’t fancy going through All Cars Made 1970-1995. What on earth is this thing?
On another tack, a two-tone Jaaaag? Well, New Jersey plates may be telling.

That right there is a can o’ worms waiting to be opened.

No wonder they stopped making them. I’ve never seen one over in the UK.

Blondude already linked to it, but it’s not an “old” car. It’s a modern one. There were a few years in the early aughts where automakers were making new cars with classic lines. That Thunderbird is one. Another, offered by Chevy, is the SSR.

You youths and your ignorance of not-very-old cars disgust me

Same idea, even more horrifying execution.
Also, ironically, both the Thunderbird and the S-Type (along with the Lincoln LS) are built on the same platform.
Also, also, I really like those Thunderbirds. Come at me, Oppo.

Interesting story:
That Thunderbird and the S-type share a platform and drivetrain.

Yeah, they didn’t sell a whole lot of them. It’s amazing to think it’s built on the same platform as this:
And as much as I love T-Birds they really should’ve put the Forty-Nine into production instead.

I’m certainly not a yoot... I just don’t take much notice of ugly rehashes, and a Ford Thunderbird is a very much a minority-interest car over here.

Haha. That’s an early 2000's Thunderbird. You don’t see many of them anywhere because, well, they’re kind of ugly.

Thunderbird. And there wouldn’t be any point going through cars of 1970-1995, it’s a 2000's car.

Ugh, that Jag. Why didn’t they at least go along the crease? Might have made it only half-bad.

i like the Thunderbird. I saw one in that exact color today

Oooooooh. That Forty-Nine. I generally don't like muscle cars, but that gives me the fizzy feeling.

One in that exact color parked outside my school every afternoon in 2003.
Fuck...middle school? That was so long ago.

Oh, I thought it was so ugly it was just a well-preserved model from the mid-90s at the latest. I didn’t think was a contemporary of the SSR. Yuck.

My wife drives an ‘02 Thunderbird and still loves it. I think the main reason they didn’t sell all that well(after the initial fanfare wore off) is that people wanted to compare them to real sports cars, when they were only ever intended to be sporty looking cruisers.
![]() 05/31/2016 at 15:50 |

I agree that that is probably why.
I’ve never driven one, but I always imagined that they drive like a two-door Town Car, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
I think they really pull off the retro styling well. It's easily my favorite from that period of car design.

I like how the thunderbird in the non light blue colors with matching color hard tops looks(black on black and yellow on yellow in particular). I think they pull off the modern/retro look really well. Also, to hell with long hood and short deck.
I just checked used prices though, and didn’t see anything listed under $10,000. I was expecting lower I guess. Not that I’m in the market, just surprised.

If the Forty-Nine isn’t a “muscle car” then that’s a sad state of affairs

Pretty sure I saw the exact same Thunderbird on the 495 yesterday.

That’s a Ford Thunderbird. New generation revamped in 2005

Shared a drivetrain and chassis with the Lincoln LS and retro Thunderbird, which are both considered decent handling but prioritize ride comfort over handling or straight line acceleration, has less power than the Mustang GT of it’s year, and is an homage to a car from long before the golden age of the muscle cars. And personally, I think it’s one of the tamer styled concepts that Ford in the past 20 years, they didn’t even include the bullet on the nose of the original ‘49.
Sorry dude, not a muscle car. It’s a cruiser. Just like most of the custom ‘49 Fords.

Thanks for the clarification... As you might have guessed, American cars aren’t my thing, to the extent that I completely blank the cruiser category. I think I’d prefer to see the styling of the Forty-Nine on some form of muscle car.
